Haiku is one of the simplest forms of poetry, but is it? The way a haiku sounds is just as important as the 5-7-5 syllable rule. A picture should be painted when you read it. Some writers practice one haiku a day. Here are a few rules:
- The haiku should represent an experienced moment from nature.
- There should be no similes or metaphors.
- Paints a verbal picture or a series of pictures.
- 17 syllables in 3 lines, written 5-7-5. (This is the “rule” most often ignored.)
- You should also avoid using articles, such as “the” and “a”.
I love being outside and in nature. So, go outside and look around. All these pictures are taken from my phone. There is a haiku waiting to be written by you.

Little brook sings
Yellow daisies nod their heads
