Nature’s Natural Push

When I visit my daughter and her family, I love to go running or walking by Utah Lake, which is only a street away. The different times of year are always so fascinating, and I love to see what is happening in nature. I came upon the ice slabs on the lake and wondered what they are called, and they are called “Ice Shoves.” The clouds were dreamy that day, too.

Nature’s Natural Push

Ice Shoves. A “slow motion” weather phenomenon.
A surge of ice piles on the shore.
The strong winds and currents push the ice along, the sun’s warmth and the cold temperatures.

The conflict, winter resisting the warm embrace of spring,
the timeless cycle of the seasons.
The rhythmic inhalation and exhalation of the earth.
The change and the inevitability of it all. The pushing.

We resist change, the uncertainty.
We prefer comfort and familiarity.
Intimidation. I am drawn to my old habits, instead of breaking out.
Fear of shoving out.

Emotional attachments, hinder my willingness to change
The sheer magnitude of change is overwhelming.
And yet…
The ice encourages growth and traps nutrients for the lake.

A natural protection for the shoreline.

Push. Pushing can be good. I can see that.
Existing beliefs and assumptions are broadened when I have pushed.
Navigating change builds resilience and growth.
Explore and discover.
Push, take a deep breath.
Release. Change.

  1. In the second picture, whenever I walk past that log, I think it looks like a hippo with its mouth open.
