The Autumn Supermoon

Through the night of October 7th, the moon swelled, bright and full,
while I lay dreaming, unaware of her quiet ascent.

The moon does not create her own light.
The reflected light travels back to Earth, creating moonlight.

The rocks and dust absorb sunlight, bouncing off the sun’s rays.
We see the Lunar side. Isn’t it weird that it’s all in our perspective?

This autumnal Supermoon is closest to the equinox,
which makes the moon appear larger and brighter than normal.

I wish I could have seen this moon last night,
but it is morning, and it’s quietly suspended in the sky.

Bright and steady, a calming presence above,
white and gray against the waking sky.

The greatest disservice we do to each other, to ourselves, to the creatures,
the animals, the moon, and the stars are to forget the quiet wonder of them all.
