Haiku Practice

Haiku is one of the simplest forms of poetry, but is it? The way a haiku sounds is just as important as the 5-7-5 syllable rule. A picture should be painted when you read it. Some writers practice one haiku a day. Here are a few rules:

  • The haiku should represent an experienced moment from nature.
  • There should be no similes or metaphors.
  • Paints a verbal picture or a series of pictures.
  • 17 syllables in 3 lines, written 5-7-5. (This is the “rule” most often ignored.)
  • You should also avoid using articles, such as “the” and “a”.

I love being outside and in nature. So, go outside and look around. All these pictures are taken from my phone. There is a haiku waiting to be written by you.

Black mountain gleams.
Sun inches in summer sky.
Dawn stretches her arms.

Little brook sings
Yellow daisies nod their heads
Hopeful bright new day.

Rainbow of colors
Nascent garden is bursting
for all to enjoy!

Happy writing!
